US UK report cover
Institute of Medicine

Workshop brought together policy makers and program managers from both countries. The UK is about a decade behind the US in terms of demographics, but has some nation-wide programs and policies. One of the presenters is head of England's School Meal Program, which totally changed as a result of chef Jamie Oliver's TV programs there. Wonder what the effect will be, in any, in the US?

Trading Cards
United Way

United Way and the National Football League partner on fitness programs for kids and other endeavors. One player on each team filmed a PSA about how he "lives united"--helps out in the community. As a companion to these PSAs, the United Way developed these cards.

On the back, each player's position, height & weight, etc.--then, instead of football-related stats, his community service stats and a quote.

Assignment: Write publication based on workshop presentations by community leaders, advocates, and policy makers on initiatives to stop the childhood obesity epidemic.

Excerpt: "...a paradigm shift that recognizes the role of the community environment is emerging, but it is far from universally accepted."

Comment: The community leaders and elected officials who spoke are among those who "get it," but they could realistically discuss how obesity-related policies succeed or fail.

United Way

Assignment: Write "community service stats" for the back of trading cards created for one member of each NFL team.

Excerpt: Check out online versions of the cards here.

Comment: How to get a lot of information in a little space? Solved it with short bullet points, a "fast stat," and a quote from each player. It was a great assignment.
