They help orient the reader and serve as mini-summaries. Remember that every "A" needs a "B" (if you have one heading at a certain level, you need at least one more), and don't go overboard. No one can wade through five levels of subheadings.
Project Learning Tree Annual Report 2007
Assignment: A brief overview of accomplishments for Project Learning Tree, a national environmental education program
Excerpt: "There's a lot to talk about, from a reinvigorated program in Mexico, complete a ceremony with high-level officials, to a lead role in a coalition urging members of Congress to authorize EE as a part of No Child Left Behind legislation. There’s also the equally important, day-in and day-out work of developing and conducting 1,300 workshops around the country, revising and testing new materials, and distributing and monitoring over $250,000 in implementation and GreenWorks! service learning grants."
Comment: We combined short articles, "factoids," quotes, sidebars, photos, and other pieces to create a publication to share with PLT state coordinators at their annual conference.
